Friends of Lead Free Children established the first Lead Screen centers
in the Dominican Republic, India, and Thailand. The Foundation donated
the equipment for the largest study of Lead poisoning ever done, Project
Lead Free in India, 22,000 children in 7 Indian cities, which resulted in the hastening of several countries in the removal of toxic Lead from gasoline.

Friends of Lead Free Children donated the equipment and training to
establish the first Lead testing center in India at Saint John's National
Institute of Health which has grown to become the National Referral Centerfor Lead Poisoning Prevention testing site of India.

In 1996, the Foundation lobbied the World Bank to take actions to
encourage policy changes sooner to reduce Lead in gasoline in India and
other Asian countries. As a result of this persistent request, The World
Bank along with the CDC, World Health Organization, US Dept of
Environment Protection, Friends of Lead Free Children and the
George Foundation collaborated to sponsor the largest international
conference on Lead Poisoning ever held, Lead Poisoning an
International Conference on Prevention and Treatment.

Friends of Lead Free Children with the George Foundation were given the
role to organize this conference, held in Bangalore, India in 1999. At this
conference, where over 85 Lead experts spoke, India announced the
banning of Lead from gasoline and this was soon followed by 6 other
Asian countries over the next year.

Friends of Lead Free Children compiled and edited the papers presented
at the conference in Bangalore India. The papers compiled represent the
largest technical book on Lead poisoning in the World. The proceedings
of the Conference can be read at www.leadpoison.net.

In 2000, Friends of Lead Free Children and The George Foundation went to Washington to gain the commitment of the World Bank, CDC, EPA, and
WHO to write a white paper on government guidelines to establishing a
National Lead Program. This was done by Dr. Abraham George and
Friends Director Steve Null in four months time and signed off by all the sponsors.

Another outcome of the conference was the establishment of a special governmental commission on Lead poisoning in India. The George Foundation has a standing member on the commission and the commission has already passed legislation, like banning Lead in paint and
regulations for occupational workers dealing with Lead. Steve Null helped furnish supplies to Dr. T. Venkatesh to continue research in Lead poisoning, as a result St. John's Medical College establish a national clearing house and referral center for Lead poisoning in India.

Lastly, Steve Null, in collaboration with St. John's Medical and The George Foundation has developed a new web site for international referrals and information concerning Lead poisoning.

The George Foundation launched in January 1997 a lead andanemia screening program in India (Project Lead-Free).

The project was initiated in Bangalore and vicinity, and
subsequently expanded to several other major cities across
India. Consistent with the Foundation's mission to serve the
welfare of children, especially those who are victims of
poverty and/or those who suffer from adverse environmental
conditions that are beyond their control, Project Lead-Free
focused on one of the growing problems that has serious
consequences for a generation of India's future work force.

A non-profit charity organization, Friends of Lead-Free
Children Inc. (headquarters in New York City), which currently has lead treatment projects in several developing countries (including programs in the Dominican Republic; Jakarta, Indonesia; and in Bangkok, Thailand), assisted The George Foundation in launching the program.

Project Lead-Free was conducted via arrangements with six
medical centers in the city of Bangalore (St. John's Medical
College and Hospital, Baptist Mission Hospital, Lake Side
Medical Center & Hospital, Cantonment X'Ray and Laboratory,
KempeGowda Institute of Medical Sciences, and M.S. Ramaiah
Medical College) which have clinics at each site.
